Speakers

Front, center and surround channels. Compare verified specs, real pricing and home-theater compatibility across every model we track.

Speakers decide how the system sounds — and they outlast everything else in the rack, which is why the budget guide puts about half of a build's money here. Two numbers govern whether a speaker is easy to live with: sensitivity (how loud it plays per watt) and impedance (the electrical load it presents, including how far it dips below the nominal figure). Both are routinely published without their measurement conditions, so our catalog records the stated values with their context — or marks the context unstated — instead of pretending all 87 dB figures mean the same thing. One pricing trap we normalize away: retailers list some speakers per unit and some per pair without saying so loudly; every stereo-pair speaker below shows what the left/right pair costs. Prices are live estimates from tracked retailers, cheapest first. Pair any speaker with a receiver in the builder and it will flag the hard-to-drive combinations before you buy.

Buying speakers — common questions

Are speaker prices per speaker or per pair?

On this site, stereo-pair speaker types (towers, bookshelves, surrounds) always show the pair price — we double per-unit retailer listings and leave already-per-pair listings alone, because the retailers themselves are inconsistent and rarely loud about it. Each product page states the unit explicitly.

What makes a speaker hard to drive?

Low sensitivity plus a low impedance dip. Every 3 dB of sensitivity halves the power needed, and a dip toward 4Ω demands current that modest receivers can't always supply — the recipe for distortion or thermal shutdowns at volume. Sensitivity and impedance, explained.

Can you mix speaker brands in one system?

Surrounds, yes — they carry ambience, not dialogue, and can even be a class below your fronts. The front three (left, center, right) are the exception: buy them from one series so voices don't change character as sound pans across the screen. Where the money matters.

Do bookshelf speakers need a subwoofer for home theater?

Plan on one. Crossed over at the usual 80 Hz, the sub carries everything below — so your mains only need to reach the crossover, and a good bookshelf pair plus a sub beats towers on placement and bass control in most small and medium rooms. Bookshelves for small rooms.
