A configurator — a parts picker for home theater — checks the pairings spec sheets won't warn you about and prices the whole system at tracked street prices. Here's what ours actually verifies, whether you start from parts or from questions.

What is a home theater configurator?

A configurator — a parts picker, in PC-building terms — is a tool that assembles a whole home theater as one system instead of five separate purchases: you pick a receiver, speakers, a subwoofer, a display, and sources, and it checks every pairing against the manufacturers' stated specs while totaling the cost at tracked prices. Ours is the builder, and the important half is the checking, not the list-making: a shopping cart will happily sell you a 5.2-channel receiver for an Atmos build, or speakers that dip toward 4Ω for a receiver that can't feed them, because a cart checks stock, not physics. A configurator exists to catch exactly those — the mistakes that only appear when parts meet each other. What does the compatibility check actually verify?

Every rule reads the same normalized spec fields the product pages show — and where a spec is unstated, the verdict is "can't check," never a silent pass. The channel math: real Dolby Atmos in a 5.1.2 layout needs seven amplified channels, so the builder counts your speaker layout against the receiver's amplified and processing channels and flags the 5.2-receiver trap before it costs you money. The electrical pairing: it reads each speaker's minimum impedance — not the friendly nominal number — against the receiver's stated load range, and weighs sensitivity and power together. Power itself is read honestly: a wattage only counts alongside its measurement context — ohms, THD, channels driven — and the builder refuses to compare figures measured under different conditions, which is the spec-sheet game that makes cheap receivers look strong. The video chain: whether the ports in the path can actually carry 4K/120 for gaming, and whether eARC is there for the TV's own apps. The bass wiring: subwoofer pre-outs counted against your subs, and a passive sub without an amplifier flagged. And projector-screen geometry: a CLR screen with a non-UST projector is a hard error, throw distance gets estimated against your screen's width, and brightness is sanity-checked for the room. None of this is exotic — it's the checklist an honest salesperson would run, encoded so it always runs.

Can you use it as a home theater cost calculator?

Yes — the running total is the cost calculator, and it's more honest than most because it prices real parts, not category averages. Every line is a current tracked price for a specific product, so the total moves when the market does, and it prices the pair-versus-each trap correctly — some speakers are sold per unit and some per pair, it's never displayed loudly, and the builder charges you for the stereo pair you'll actually order. The question a calculator can't answer is how to split the money, and that has a researched answer: roughly half into speakers, a fifth into the subwoofer, a quarter into the receiver, with the display and seating as their own line items. How do you build your own surround sound system with one?

In the order that prevents re-buying: room first, display second, then the receiver and speakers together as a pair. What can't a configurator do?

It can't hear your room, and it won't pretend to. The two upgrades that shape the final sound as much as any component — speaker placement and the receiver's room-correction run — are free, manual, and yours to do; no tool substitutes for the subwoofer crawl. It also can't conjure specs a manufacturer never published: where a sheet is silent, our catalog stores the blank as "unstated" and the affected check says "can't check" instead of guessing — you'll see that in the results, and it's deliberate, because a confident answer built on a missing number is how systems end up mismatched. And prices move: totals are today's tracked numbers, not promises. What it can do is make the expensive class of mistake — parts that don't work as a system — very hard to commit.
