Projection buys the biggest picture per dollar — once the room cooperates. Brightness is the first filter, and an honest one matters: lumen figures are manufacturer claims measured in flattering modes, so we present them as claims, useful for ranking projectors against each other but not the number you'll see in an accurate cinema mode. The throw type is the second filter, because it decides the furniture and the screen: conventional-throw models mount at distance, while ultra-short-throw (UST) designs sit inches from the wall and REQUIRE a lenticular light-rejecting screen — a pairing invariant the builder enforces rather than footnotes. Light source (laser lifespan vs replaceable lamps), input lag for gaming, and lens shift round out the recorded fields, each with per-field provenance and an honest "unstated" when a spec sheet goes quiet. Buying projectors — common questions

How many lumens do you need?

For a genuinely dark room, brightness is rarely the constraint. For daytime or bright-room viewing, treat 3,000+ claimed lumens as the entry ticket — and remember every figure here is the manufacturer's own rating, delivered in its brightest mode, not calibrated output. The bright-room guide.

Do UST projectors need a special screen?

Yes, non-negotiably: a UST fires steeply upward, so it needs a lenticular ceiling-light-rejecting (CLR) screen built for that geometry — on a standard-gain or ordinary ALR screen the image washes out. Our compatibility engine flags exactly this pairing. Browse UST-ready screens.

How far back does a projector need to sit?

Its throw ratio times the image width you want — throw ratio is distance divided by image width, so a 1.5 ratio needs about 15 feet to fill a 10-foot-wide picture, and a zoom lens gives you a range instead of one figure. Our throw distance table works it out for every projector we track at each mount distance from 8 to 20 feet. It is geometry over stated ratios only: it will not tell you whether the projector clears your ceiling.

Laser or lamp?

Laser light sources are typically rated for tens of thousands of hours and hold brightness longer; lamp models cost less up front but consume replaceable lamps over time. Where a model's lamp life or replacement cost is unstated in our data, we say so rather than doing invented total-cost math.
