Home / Tools / Projector Throw Distance Calculator Tool · computed live from the catalog
Projector throw distance calculator Every projector we track whose maker states a throw ratio, and how wide an image it fills at each ceiling-mount distance from 8 to 20 feet. The calculator works one model or one ratio at any distance or screen size; the table under it starts from the room you have rather than the projector you already picked.
How to read it
Throw ratio is the mount distance divided by the image width , so image width is simply distance ÷ ratio. A zoom lens gives a range at every distance: the smaller figure is the lens zoomed in, the larger one zoomed out. Under each width is the diagonal that width works out to at the projector’s native aspect ratio — the number a screen is sold by. Of the 188 projectors in the catalog, 119 are charted below, 29 are ultra-short-throw and sit in their own section, and 40 state no throw ratio at all and are named at the bottom. Where a maker states no native aspect ratio the widths are still charted and the diagonal underneath is left blank rather than guessed.
What this does not tell you
This table says how wide the image is at a distance. It does not say the projector will fit your room. Distance is measured from the LENS to the screen, as manufacturers define it — a long projector body sits further back than that, and a big one is over a foot deep. Nothing here models mount offset, lens shift or ceiling height — lens_shift_vertical_pct is free-form text on a spec sheet, not a number we can compute with. Rough figure — verify with the maker's calculator.
Throw distance calculator Pick a projector we track to use its maker’s stated throw ratio, or type one in. Distance is from the lens to the screen.

8.0 ft wide · 110" diagonal
A 1.5:1 throw ratio at 12.0 ft, as a 16:9 image. Width is distance ÷ ratio; the diagonal is that width at 16:9.
Filters ▾ Throw ratio ▾ Lens ▾ Brand ▾ Verified ratio source
Image width by mount distance Long-throw, standard and short-throw models, sorted by brand. Each cell is the image width at that distance, with its diagonal underneath; a projector with one stated ratio shows one figure rather than a range. Where a maker states an image-size envelope it bounds the cell at both ends: a distance whose smallest achievable picture is already past the stated maximum — or whose largest is already under the stated minimum — says so instead of printing a number, and a distance where only one end falls outside is printed with that end held at the stated bound and labelled. Where no native aspect ratio is stated, the maximum is still applied against the WIDTH, since a diagonal is longer than the width it belongs to whatever the aspect; that test can rule a cell out but not rule one in, and the rows it applies to say so. Where a maker states no envelope at all, nothing is bounded and the geometry prints as it computes — an absent maximum is not a maximum of zero.

Widths and diagonals are arithmetic over each manufacturer’s own stated throw ratio and native aspect ratio. Nothing here is measured, estimated or interpolated, and no figure is carried over from a sibling model.
† Stated image size checked against the width only: a width past the stated maximum is impossible at any aspect, but a width inside it does not prove the diagonal is. The stated minimum is not applied on these rows at all.
Ultra-short-throw, separately A UST throw ratio is quoted from the cabinet face, with the projector on furniture directly below the screen — not from a ceiling mount at the back of the room. Putting a 0.25 ratio in a “12 feet back” column would not be a small number, it would be the wrong question. What plans a UST installation is the image-size range its maker states, so that is what this section carries. Of the 29 listed here, 4 state neither a throw ratio nor an image-size range in any source we track — they are listed by name, but this section can say nothing else about them, so read them alongside the uncharted list below.

Lumens are each manufacturer’s own ANSI/ISO claim where one is stated; we never write a “light source lumens” figure into that field, and nothing on this page is derived from it. A UST also needs a screen built for its geometry — see the
UST and ALR screen guide .
What we couldn’t chart These projectors are tracked, but no source we track states a throw ratio for them, so there is no division to do. They are named rather than dropped — a table that quietly loses rows is a table whose totals nobody can reconcile against the category page. A missing aspect ratio is NOT a reason to be here: those rows are charted on width, with the diagonal left blank.
A value no source states is stored as a first-class “unstated” rather than guessed — see our
methodology and the
spec-sheet honesty report , which counts that silence across all nine categories.
Questions What is a projector's throw ratio? Throw ratio is the throw distance divided by the image WIDTH — not the diagonal. A projector with a 1.5 throw ratio sits 1.5 feet back for every foot of image width, so a 10-foot-wide image needs about 15 feet of distance. A zoom lens states a range instead of one number: the low end of that range gives the widest image at any given distance, and the high end the smallest. Every width in this table is that one division, and every diagonal is Pythagoras on the resulting rectangle at the projector's native aspect ratio.
Why aren't ultra-short-throw projectors in the distance columns? Because a UST throw ratio is quoted from the cabinet face, with the projector sitting on furniture directly below the screen — not from a ceiling mount at the back of the room. Reading a 0.25 ratio as "mount it two and a half feet back" is a category error, not a small number. UST models are listed in their own section with the image-size range their makers state, which is the figure that actually plans a UST installation.
Does this tell me whether the projector will clear my ceiling? No. This table says how wide the image is at a distance. It does not say the projector will fit your room. Nothing here models mount offset, lens shift or ceiling height — lens shift is published as free-form text on a spec sheet, not as a number anything can compute with. Treat these as rough figures for narrowing a shortlist, then verify the model you have chosen against the maker's own calculator before you drill anything.
Take the data The whole table is downloadable as CSV or JSON : one row per projector per distance for the charted models, carrying the throw ratio, aspect ratio and source URL, plus one row each for the ultra-short-throw models and the uncharted ones, which have no distance to state. A section column says which is which, and the payload's own method block defines every enum and flag column without reference to this page. Both are recomputed hourly from the live catalog, and every row restates the date it was cut. Reuse is free for individual, non-bulk use with attribution and a link back; for bulk or commercial use, get in touch first — the same terms as the rest of our catalog data, set out on our terms page . If you quote a figure, please note the date you retrieved it: the catalog grows, and the number may not be the same next month.
Working the other way round — from the seat rather than the mount? Our screen size for your seating distance guide gives you the size to aim for, the seating-distance table says which screens and TVs we track land in that band from your seat, and this table tells you which projectors reach it from where you can actually mount one. For the brightness half of the decision, see projectors for a bright room . Then browse projectors and projector screens , or put a pair into the builder and let the compatibility engine check the throw against the exact screen you picked.
Recomputed hourly. Cut for this page at 2026-10-11. Canonical URL: /tools/projector-throw-distance .
