The Spec-Sheet Honesty Report’s aggregate statistics are published under a free, commercial-use-permitted licence, downloadable as CSV or JSON, and quotable with a date. Take the numbers, credit us with a link, and tell us if we’re wrong.
What the data is
Our pipeline stores a first-class “unstated” wherever a spec sheet goes quiet, so we can count the silence rather than quietly dropping it (our methodology). The dataset published here is the aggregate of that counting, across all nine categories we track — receivers, loudspeakers, subwoofers, TVs, projectors, projection screens, media players, acoustic treatment and theater seating, 2547 products in total. For each of them: how many state a given specification, how many of those also state the measurement conditions that make the number mean anything, and — for the two categories where a single headline figure carries a companion condition — the same breakdown per brand. It is the summary layer behind the Spec-Sheet Honesty Report, recomputed hourly from the live catalog.
481 of 562 tracked loudspeakers publish a sensitivity rating, and 418 of those — 87% — state no measurement conditions. Only 169 of 562 disclose minimum impedance. Among AV receivers, 47 of 64 publish a power rating, 5 of those omit how many channels were driven, and 42 state distortion. Of 143 subwoofer low-frequency extension claims, 48 arrive with no dB tolerance. The per-brand tables cover 27 brands across those two categories.
The picture on the display side is sharper still. 146 of 196 TVs state whether VRR is supported; 11 of 188 projectors do — the field is plainly printable, and one industry prints it. ALLM runs 103 of 196 against 22 of 188. Input lag is the one pair that is not a like-for-like comparison, because each side is stated at a different mode: 5 of 196 TVs give a figure at 4K/120, and 56 of 188 projectors give one at 4K/60. Read those two as separate counts, not against each other. Elsewhere: 711 of 964 projection screens publish a gain figure and 275 of those state no half-gain viewing angle, which is the number that says how fast the gain disappears as you move off centre. 13 of the 42 media players claiming a maximum resolution don’t say which frame rates they output. 47 of 92 acoustic panels publish an NRC average without the full 125 Hz / 500 Hz / 2 kHz set behind it, and 178 of 242 state whether they are sold as a single panel or a multi-panel pack — of the 62 sold as a pack, 30 say how many panels that pack contains. And 49 of 105 seating models state a per-seat weight capacity, while 47 of the 61 that publish a total row width never break it down per seat.
Three honest caveats travel with every figure. “Not stated” means our normalized record carries no value for the field — either the sources we track don’t state it, or no source we track covers it; we count our records, not manufacturers’ intent, and the pipeline’s refusal to guess is what makes the two line up. A stated no counts as stated: a projector sheet that says “VRR: not supported” has told you something, and only silence is silence. And a brand needs at least 3 tracked models before it gets a table row, because fewer than that cannot characterize a brand honestly — which is also why per-brand tables exist only for loudspeakers and receivers, where one headline number carries one companion condition. The other seven categories are published at category level rather than given an invented column.
Licence
The aggregate statistics and the per-brand disclosure tables of the Spec-Sheet Honesty Report — the category counts, the per-brand rows, and the CSV and JSON exports below — are licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0). You may reuse, republish, chart and remix them, including commercially, for free. The one condition is attribution: credit Home Theater Builder and include a link back to the report.
That licence covers the counts, and only the counts. The per-product catalog — the individual specifications, provenance records and prices, including everything served by our catalog API at /api/catalog/<category> — is not CC-licensed and stays under our own terms: free for individual, non-bulk use with attribution and a link back; for bulk or commercial use, get in touch first. We’d rather say yes to a specific request than pretend a blanket grant covers data we normalize product by product.
Both halves of that split are mirrored in our Terms of Service, which carries an express carve-out for everything licensed here — the two pages state the same sentence from the same constant, so the site can never tell you one thing on this page and the opposite on that one.
Downloads
Both files carry the same aggregates, a generated-at timestamp and the licence, so a file that has been mailed around still says when it was cut and how to credit it.
spec-sheet-honesty.csv — spreadsheet-ready, one row per brand and one row per category-wide disclosure metric. The scope column tells the two apart, and population says what each row’s denominator counts, so nothing has to be inferred.
spec-sheet-honesty.json — the same rows plus every category’s totals, nested, with a flat metrics array if you’d rather iterate than navigate.
How to cite
Quote a number with its date — the catalog grows, so a figure without an “as of” is a figure that will quietly go wrong. These blocks are generated from the numbers above, so they’re correct as of this page load. Paste one as-is:
